Leadership Cumberland County

Cumberland County has been fortunate in having leadership from all sectors of the County. However, it is necessary to replenish the supply of leadership; leaders who are informed, skilled and vigorous individuals capable of understanding community problems, interpreting facts related to them and influencing decisions based on these facts.

Leadership Cumberland County assures a continuous source of strong leadership by establishing a leadership program for existing and emerging leaders who will assume responsible positions in neighborhoods and communities throughout Cumberland County. The program’s objectives focus on establishing a network of leaders; providing a means to ramp-up new leaders as they enter the County; identifying emerging leaders; valuing diversity as a resource county-wide; and encouraging the development of pride in Cumberland County.

GOAL: Leadership Cumberland County acquaints participants with a broad understanding of public problems, the workings of State and local government, the civic challenges facing all of us and the role the community plays in solving problems.

PROGRAM TOPICS: Traditionally held the end of September, a group retreat and orientation session initiates the program year. Eight monthly sessions, referred to as Community Learning Days, are held on the first Monday of every month, November through June, typically 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. Sessions are held at locations throughout the county so participants may receive firsthand knowledge of local points of interest. Community Learning Days topics are designed to educate and inform participants of the vast resources available to them, and therefore cover an array of topics prevalent to the successes and challenges we face in Cumberland County. They include the following:

  • Criminal Justice
  • Cultural Affairs & Tourism
  • Cultural Diversity
  • Economic Development
  • Education
  • Health & Human Services
  • Rural & Urban Issues
  • State & Local Government

Class Structure: Twenty-four participants are accepted into the class on an annual basis. A percentage of the participants represent charter members of the program, with the remaining class participants determined through an application and selection process. Current charter memberships are held by the following organizations:

  • Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention/Affiliated Counseling Service, Inc
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cumberland & Salem Counties
  • Bridgeton Area Chamber of Commerce
  • Cumberland County Board of Agriculture
  • Cumberland County Association of School Administrators
  • Cumberland County Board of Chosen Freeholders
  • Cumberland County College
  • Cumberland Empowerment Zone, Corp
  • Human Resources Association of Southern New Jersey
  • South Jersey Healthcare
  • Tri-County Community Action Partnership
  • Vineland Rotary

Participant Commitment: Leadership Cumberland County class participants commit to the following upon acceptance into the program:

  • attend the entire program retreat/orientation session
  • attend eight of the Community Learning Day sessions with the understanding that, under extenuating circumstances, should I miss one session I will remain eligible for graduation from the program
  • maintain the confidentiality of my fellow classmates and presenters concerning the sharing of personal and professional material and opinions
  • accept the Community Learning Day guidelines as adopted by my class at the program retreat/orientation session
  • pay the $700.00 program tuition no later than December 31, 2008
  • and, agree to uphold the Conduct Policy as presented in the participant acceptance package.

Note: Full or partial tuition reimbursement, due to lack of participant commitment as described above, is not a practice of the Leadership Cumberland County program.

Application: Applications are accepted on an annual basis with a postmark deadline of August 15th. Selected participants are notified the first week of September.
